Embracing Health Radio #66 – Consumer Reports Says Alternative Therapies are on the Rise; Shocking New Research on the Effects of Sugar on Healthy People; Protein and Blood Pressure; Part II of the Hygiene Hypothesis Debate

Hello Everyone!  Have a few updates to give you all today, along with the latest radio broadcast link for your listening pleasure…..first, we are going to be at the Heart and Hands Emporium which is being held to raise funds for  the Gateway Domestic Violence Center.  Gateway helps create an environment for safe, healthy, self-sufficient growth and violence prevention through crisis intervention, comprehensive support services and community collaboration.  This will be a wonderful two-day shopping extravaganza sponsored annually by the Heart & Hands Women’s Ministry at First Baptist Church in Gainesville, Georgia.  Over 50 vendors fill the church’s huge banquet hall with a variety of booths featuring hard-to-find items, gifts of all kinds, and other rare treasures.   We’ll have a booth there so please stop by and say hi Friday Sept. 23rd and Saturday Sept 24th and help support this wonderful cause.  For more info, visit http://www.fbcgainesville.org/adult_women.asp

Next, we are sponsoring our first annual Petpalooza on Saturday, October 22nd from 11:00-3:00pm here at the Spa on Green Street  Any breeders that would be interested in attending, please give us a call as we are planning for this to be a great event where anyone with any interest in healthy animal care should attend.  We will have local veterinarians discuss their unique approaches towards animal care, as well as exhibitions of various animals including wild birds of prey and their unique needs.  This promises to be an exciting event and we all hope that you can attend.  More info to come!

Now, here’s my latest post with a radio show I did at the end of July — I will post up the latest ones here shortly.  The show link below starts off with an encouraging trend showing up, where Americans are ‘flocking’ towards alternative therapies.  Is this a trend worth noting and what does it mean to you?  Find out!  Also, find out how new research states that sugar laden beverages negatively affect the health of fit, young, active men.  It was previously thought that sugary beverages just affect the predisposed, unhealthy population and now apparently that regardless of your current health, sugar, in the form of liquid beverages at least, can promote negative health effects.  Listen to find out which kind!  I also discuss the link between whey protein consumption and improved blood pressure control, and finally part II of the Hygiene Hypothesis.

Click on the link below for the archived show!  And as always, tune in every Friday at noon on WBCX 89.1 FM right here in North Georgia to get the latest, up to date scoop.  Tomorrow 9/16 I will be talking about holistic dentistry and will have a special guest on the show.  See you later!

In the News: Consumer Reports Says Americans Are Flocking to Alternative Therapies; Low to Moderate Sugar-Sweetened beverage Consumption Impairs Glucose and Lipid Metabolism and Promotes Inflammation in Healthy Young Men; Protein Supplementation Lowers Blood Pressure; Part II of The Hygiene Hypothesis

Thinking of Spring

The weather here in the North Georgia Mountain area is challenging this time of year isn’t it? It is officially spring time, trees and flowers are blooming and the allergies have kicked in, yet we still have to layer our clothes or just end up inappropriately dressed for the weather on any given day.

I speak of spring because traditionally this time of year is when we all tend to break out the short sleeved shirts, shorts, and yes……the dreaded bathing suits. It is my job to help others to not only get ready for this time of year, physically and mentally but to learn to look forward to spring rather than dread it’s impending arrival. No, we can’t hide under our layers all year, unless of course we move to Alaska.

Anyone in their 40’s and above can attest that it takes much more commitment and diligence than it used to in our 20’s and 30’s, to have what would be a pleasant experience when we shed our layers  of clothing. This process should not be a similar situation to cramming for a final exam. I find that so many of us wait until March to decide to develop a fitness and nutritional plan in order to shed some excess weight. Though, it’s better late than never, I believe that for the long term health of the body, we must be more proactive and learn to develop new and lasting lifestyle habits and have them remain year round.

Here are a few tips on shedding the fat for Spring 2011:

  • Find a friend or group of like-minded individuals who are also looking to live healthier lifestyles.
  • Take the time each week to plan out your meals; it helps cut grocery costs as well.
  • Minimize your intake of process food and complex carbohydrates; eat more protein, vegetables and fruit.
  • Start moving; find a group class, personal trainer or a buddy who will hold you accountable. Start with 30 minutes 3 x week minimum.

Join us here on April 7th at The Spa on Green Street for our “Shed the FatSeminar at 6pm. We will discuss the details and starting points to helping you change the way your live and transform your body permanently!!! Sign up soon as space is very limited. Call us today 678.450.1570

Skin Care Meets Fitness Meets Nutrition Seminar a HIT!

I wanted to thank everybody for attending our Skin Care event last Tuesday.  We had a lot of fun discussing proper skin care from both an aesthetic perspective and a nutritional and fitness perspective.  We hope you are enjoying your gifts and are using them daily to improve the quality of your skin.

I thought it would be helpful to briefly recap some of the nutritional elements we considered that evening, as everyone contributed to a great discussion and we all learned so much from each other.  In helping to overcome or improve any health condition, it’s smart to simply be mindful to being economical and resourceful.  This is sound advice I’ve received from my friends and teachers over the years, and it directly applies to this topic of healthy skin.  How?  Well, before you try to add value to your skincare by using high-grade cosmoceuticals such as the Anakiri skin care line, you want to make sure you are not detracting from the health of our skin by the types of foods you eat.  Many common foods in our diet can be quite harmful to the health and appearance of our skin.

I asked the participants which foods they thought was the absolute worst for skin health.  The answers slowly but surely came.  Caffeine was the first example.  We know that caffeine-containing beverages can cause the body to eliminate a lot of water which then can give the skin a less supple appearance.  It is a good idea to keep well hydrated, and products like Rehydration can help in this regard.

Next, someone mentioned sugar.  Sugar is well known to cause a host of metabolic problems in your body, most notably relative to weight and blood sugar control.  High blood sugars cause a process in the body called ‘glycation’ which can end up accelerating the aging process of all tissues and cells, including the skin.

After that, someone mentioned saturated fats – and here we were closer, right around the corner from the answer I had in mind.  Saturated fats have surely been demonized in our low-fat dietary recommendations that our nutritional establishments have been circulating for the last 50 years or so.  However, recent evidence has pointed out that the body has a need for saturated fats and indeed, there is no link between saturated fats and heart disease as previously thought.  Now that’s some refreshing news!

The big culprits here are the trans fats and hydrogenated vegetable oils.  These have been seriously linked to a host of imbalances and diseases – to the point they have been banned in cities like New York and Chicago where restaurants are strictly forbidden to use them.  They cause a rapid oxidation, or breakdown of cellular tissue, much like you would see in the face of someone who is a chronic smoker where the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles are higher than average.  Avoid these artificial fats like the plague and your skin and whole body will thank you!

All of the above represent items in your diet you should avoid if you want better health and better skin.  Remember, out with the bad first, and then in with the good to maximize your results.

Committing to a lifestyle that embraces proper nutrition and fitness is a surefire way to achieving that radiant glow which people cannot resist.  Then you will see your skincare products work magic!

The Secrets to Fat Loss Seminar

Welcome to the fresh new year of 2011, full of hopes and dreams, ambitions and aspirations!  We’d like to kick off this year with party just for you…….wait, you may be thinking, another party?  We just got through New Years and you want to celebrate some more?  Well, this party is a party for those of you who are looking to celebrate a new version of yourselves, a version that is fitter, healthier, leaner and more energetic – how about that?  Start the year off right by attending our Open Gym/Open House on January 13th from 5:30 – 7pm.  You won’t want to miss it, as we are hosting a Fitness Party and Weight-Loss Seminar for you and your friends.  This is a great chance to get together and enjoy the companionship and mutual interest of like-minded people, people who share the same goals of being healthy and fit just like you.  If you haven’t met us yet in person, come by and get to know us – we’d love to get to know you and become supportive of your mission!

As many of you have come to realize, fat loss isn’t easy.  It is much easier to put on extra pounds than it is to take it off.  Well, let me tell you that it doesn’t have to be that way!  Knowing the ins and outs of what it takes to most effectively and efficiently burn fat is sorely needed in our society today.  This is not just about weight loss — it is about fat loss.  When you are looking to lose weight, you want to lose the fat, not the muscle.  Typical advice of simply eating less and exercising more dismisses some very important aspects of how your body keenly regulates both its weight and its hunger.  Knowing these key principles will help you make sustainable, long-lasting progress and finally put an end to yo-yo like fluctuations in weight.

Are you working hard with your fitness and exercise program yet seeing little results?  Stop spinning your wheels and fill in the missing pieces to your overall program.  Learn how to work smarter, not harder.  Exercise and nutrition work hand in hand, and your individual chemistry has to be taken into account for you to be effective.

Join me for an hour long presentation that evening titled “The Secrets to Fat Loss” and learn the insider ‘secrets’ to most easily improve your health and lose fat at the same time.  Let’s let the cat out of the bag early on in 2011 and let this year be one that manifests our hopes and dreams…..see you there!

Highlights include:

  • SYWS, or ‘Spinning Your Wheels Syndrome’ – how to put the rubber on the road and get on the fast track to fat loss
  • Out-training a faulty diet, or “I just really need to work harder” – industry myth or motto?
  • The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly – what diet is right for me?
  • Losing the ‘Middle-Aged Middle’ – is belly fat all that different?
  • The ultimate secret of success – learning to connect your goals with your emotions
