Embracing Health Radio #66 – Consumer Reports Says Alternative Therapies are on the Rise; Shocking New Research on the Effects of Sugar on Healthy People; Protein and Blood Pressure; Part II of the Hygiene Hypothesis Debate

Hello Everyone!  Have a few updates to give you all today, along with the latest radio broadcast link for your listening pleasure…..first, we are going to be at the Heart and Hands Emporium which is being held to raise funds for  the Gateway Domestic Violence Center.  Gateway helps create an environment for safe, healthy, self-sufficient growth and violence prevention through crisis intervention, comprehensive support services and community collaboration.  This will be a wonderful two-day shopping extravaganza sponsored annually by the Heart & Hands Women’s Ministry at First Baptist Church in Gainesville, Georgia.  Over 50 vendors fill the church’s huge banquet hall with a variety of booths featuring hard-to-find items, gifts of all kinds, and other rare treasures.   We’ll have a booth there so please stop by and say hi Friday Sept. 23rd and Saturday Sept 24th and help support this wonderful cause.  For more info, visit http://www.fbcgainesville.org/adult_women.asp

Next, we are sponsoring our first annual Petpalooza on Saturday, October 22nd from 11:00-3:00pm here at the Spa on Green Street  Any breeders that would be interested in attending, please give us a call as we are planning for this to be a great event where anyone with any interest in healthy animal care should attend.  We will have local veterinarians discuss their unique approaches towards animal care, as well as exhibitions of various animals including wild birds of prey and their unique needs.  This promises to be an exciting event and we all hope that you can attend.  More info to come!

Now, here’s my latest post with a radio show I did at the end of July — I will post up the latest ones here shortly.  The show link below starts off with an encouraging trend showing up, where Americans are ‘flocking’ towards alternative therapies.  Is this a trend worth noting and what does it mean to you?  Find out!  Also, find out how new research states that sugar laden beverages negatively affect the health of fit, young, active men.  It was previously thought that sugary beverages just affect the predisposed, unhealthy population and now apparently that regardless of your current health, sugar, in the form of liquid beverages at least, can promote negative health effects.  Listen to find out which kind!  I also discuss the link between whey protein consumption and improved blood pressure control, and finally part II of the Hygiene Hypothesis.

Click on the link below for the archived show!  And as always, tune in every Friday at noon on WBCX 89.1 FM right here in North Georgia to get the latest, up to date scoop.  Tomorrow 9/16 I will be talking about holistic dentistry and will have a special guest on the show.  See you later!

In the News: Consumer Reports Says Americans Are Flocking to Alternative Therapies; Low to Moderate Sugar-Sweetened beverage Consumption Impairs Glucose and Lipid Metabolism and Promotes Inflammation in Healthy Young Men; Protein Supplementation Lowers Blood Pressure; Part II of The Hygiene Hypothesis

Embracing Health Radio #65 – Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder

Howdy Folks! Long time no see, I know……been keeping busy here at SGS with alot of good work done in TX helping my patients out over there, as well as moving things along here at the Spa. I’m excited to be taking more of an active role in the management over here, and plan to do a series of trainings with both the front desk and the staff, and we expect to see alot of good things come from it, namely helping more and more people become healthier! That’s what it’s all about, what we’re all about, and it is our commitment to you to provide excellence in healthcare, wellness and customer service. It all works together to create the best ‘guest experience’ here at our facility, and we’ve got many great specials coming up that you won’t want to miss out on.
For now, I’d like to post my recent radio show link. This past Friday I introduced a very delicate topic for the first time – Autism Spectrum Disorder – and I’ve hesitated to speak about this for some time due to various reasons in the industry. It is a hotly debated topic with plenty of opinions that seem to contradict each other at times. Though I’ve worked with these cases many times over the years, there seems to finally be a relaxing in the tensions here between the different opinionated camps, where some say it’s all genetic and others say it is all about the environment, toxicity and even vaccinations. I personally believe we have to take all the data into account and form reasonable hypotheses which then have to be tested rigorously to arrive at greater conclusions. Now, some new recent research is strongly pointing to the environmental links here, and it appears more research – good research – will come out of it. Find out more by listening in!
Next, I speak about a very interesting topic that caught my attention — the topic of hygiene and sanitation in our modern society, where some scientists think we have taken this too far. I did not finish my thoughts on this area, so I will be talking more about it on tomorrow’s show, so tune in for that. In any case, here’s the link and I hope you enjoy it. Thanks for tuning in and supporting our efforts to improve the quality of healthcare in our country. We all deserve it, we all need it. See you later!

The Importance of a Well-Designed Fitness Program

My name is Gregg Hake and I am President of the Spa on Green Street and the Body Sanctuary, Inc. in Gainesville, GA. Our Fitness Director and Pilates Instructor, Barb Miller, returned from the 20th Annual Atlanta MANIA fitness show held recently with a renewed spark in her eye and an contagious skip in her step. Barb attended a number of advanced training sessions on cutting edge fitness techniques, but one that stood out to her was Chuck Wolf’s “Flexibility Highways in Motion.”

“Strength,” “flexibility” and “cardio” have long been buzzwords in the fitness industry and many of the training modalities emphasize one or the other in varying degrees. Some, such as yoga or pilates, consist of a healthy blend of strength and flexibility, while others, such as weight training, tend to emphasize strength and cardio fitness.

Mr. Wolf makes the interesting point that the fitness industry tends to focus on increasing strength, flexibility and cardio capacity but tends to overlook the controls that must be put into place to make such increases safe and manageable. Assist a client with stretching and various exercises, for instance, and you may increase his flexibility, but if you do not provide a corresponding exercise to augment his eccentric control to stop the flexion at the new limit and return back form that point, you risk creating an imbalance that can lead to injury.

A well-designed fitness program should match every increase in capability with a corresponding increase in control. We recognize at the Spa on Green Street and the Body Sanctuary, Inc. that wellbeing comes naturally when strength, flexibility and cardio fitness are in balance, but most importantly, when capability and control are well-matched.

Stop by the Spa on Green Street today for your complimentary fitness consultation where we match your fitness goals with a practical, doable program that balances capability with control. We have no membership charges, no contracts and we tailor every fitness program to your personal functional needs. All of that in an elegant, stately setting on historic Green Street!

Embracing Health Radio #64 – How Food Companies Trick You – Part II; Chemicals in our Food – the New Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen; Sunshine – Healthy or Harmful?

Hi there folks — listen to part II of ‘How Food Companies Trick You into Thinking their Junk Food is Healthy’.  You don’t want to miss these highly deceiving tactics employed by the big food giants to falsely market their products as healthy when in reality they are far from it.  This is actually from a post written by Dr. Yoni Freedhoff, MD who is a ‘nutritional watchdog’ of sorts because of his advocacy efforts for improved public policies regarding nutrition and obesity.  He is the founder and Medical Director of the Bariatric Medical Institute in Ottawa, dedicated to the (nonsurgical) treatment of overweight and obesity since 2004.  If you missed part I, scroll back a few posts and you will find it there.

Also, I talk about a recent report released by the nonprofit group Environmental Working Group where they discuss the hazards of pesticides in our foods, and their ‘dirty dozen’ list of most heavily sprayed crops as well as the ‘clean fifteen’ list of least sprayed crops.

Furthermore, I discuss the conundrum about sunshine — we are told to stay out of it and we are also told we need it.  What gives? Learn about:

  1. Low Vitamin D levels:  a potential contributor to mental disorders in children?
  2. FDA unveils new rules for sunscreen claims
  3. Noted UK oncologist speaks out about getting more sun and how he recommends sun to prevent skin cancer

This and much much more on this edition of Embracing Health —- enjoy!

Making Sense of Food Allergies – The Dangers of our Modern Food System

A recent study published on June 20th in the medical journal Pediatrics reveals that food allergies in children are a serious issue and they demand further attention.  It is the largest study to date that has tracked childhood food allergies in the U.S. and shows that they may be more common and more dangerous than previously recognized.  This is a growing problem here and I’d like to share an important perspective with you that I feel deserves great care and attention.

I’ve  been talking about both food allergies and food sensitivities for some time now, and it is a main component of my clinical practice in helping people to improve their health.  Allergies and sensitivites are quite different, but they both involve exaggerated reactions of your body that contribute to whole list of symptoms and chronic diseases.  The immune system is a very dynamic and complex system, and one of its main characteristics is inflammation — that’s how your body fights disease and initiates repair.  However, chronic stimulation of the immune system leads to chronic inflammation, and that leads to prolonged damage to your body that never gets a chance to heal.  You basically are worn down by all the damage being done by your own immune system.  That’s what autoimmune disease is in a nutshell — constant irritation and inflammation that wears away the very fabric of your organs, tissues and cells.

Below, you will find a presentation given by Robyn O’brien who started her career as a food industry analyst and was prompted to dig deeper at the nature of our modern food supply when her own daughter developed strange reactions one morning while eating breakfast. She has been called the “Erin Brockovich” of the food industry and has been praised by the likes of Ted Turner and Dr. Mehmet Oz. Her meticulously detailed research sheds light on policy, the American food system and its financially-driven incentive structure that has allowed additives into the U.S. food supply that have either been banned or labeled from foods in other developed countries, especially the food served to children.  Folks, this is serious stuff here and if you are interested in improving your own health and the health of your family, then please take the time to watch the video below.

In her research, she condenses the possible causes of increasing allergies to the following list:
1. The shift from a natural to an industrial environment
2. Excessive exposure to antibiotics, both as prescribed to our children and as consumed through antibiotic-laden meat, milk, and poultry.
3. The rise in pollutants and environmental toxins (perhaps including the fumes and residues from some of the chemical products we use to clean our homes).
4. Our tendency to eat more processed foods loaded with chemical additives and preservatives and to eat far fewer natural whole foods.

Enjoy this eye-opening presentation.
